How to choose football shin guards: 5 things to check

Shin guards are the only protection the Laws of the Game require in every match. A good guard protects the shin from kicks and studs without getting in the way when you run. Here is what to look for when you choose.

1. Size matters most

The guard should cover the shin from a few fingers below the knee to just above the ankle. A guard that is too big presses on the ankle and limits movement. One that is too small leaves part of the bone unprotected.

Measure with a ruler from 3–4 fingers below the knee to about 3 cm above the ankle, and compare with the height of the guard. We explain it step by step in What size football shin guards should I choose. MyShin sizes are in the size chart.

2. Classic or mini guards

Classic guards cover more of the shin and protect more. Mini guards are lighter and you barely feel them, but the protected area is smaller. For kids, youth players and high-contact matches we recommend a classic size. The pros and cons are in Mini shin guards: comfort or protection.

3. Material and shape

The hard outer shell takes the impact, and the soft padding inside spreads it and protects the skin. The guard should be curved to the shape of the leg, so it sits tight on the bone and doesn't twist.

4. How it stays on

  • Sleeve (a sock under the sock): holds the guard firmly in place without squeezing the ankle. The most comfortable option for most players.
  • Velcro straps: easy to put on, but they can loosen or pinch when you run.
  • Tape: used as extra support. Under the Laws, tape on the outside must be the same colour as the sock.

5. The rules

Law 4 of the Laws of the Game requires shin guards in every match. They must be fully covered by the sock and be of a suitable size and material to give reasonable protection. The player is responsible for their size. Some youth and amateur competitions have their own rules too, so check your league's regulations.

Bonus: guards with your own design

Shin guards are on show at every warm-up and in every match photo. With MyShin you can print your own photo, name and number on them, or pick a ready-made design. The print is made by sublimation, so it doesn't peel or fade.
