What size football shin guards should I choose? How to measure correctly

The wrong size is the most common reason shin guards get in the way: they slip, twist or press on the ankle. Here is how to pick the right size in a minute.

Measure with a ruler

  1. Sit down and bend your leg at a right angle.
  2. Place a ruler on the shin, 3–4 fingers below the knee.
  3. Measure down to about 3 cm above the ankle. The guard must not touch the ankle when you flex your foot.
  4. Compare the number with the height of the guard in the chart below.

M16.5 cm11.2 cm
L19 cm12.5 cm

Mini XS8 cm5.5 cm

The width is measured along the curve of the guard. All sizes are drawn to real scale in the chart on the home page.

Between two sizes?

Take the smaller one. A guard that touches the ankle or the knee gets in the way when you run and moves around. A slightly shorter guard that stays put protects better.

Shin guards for kids

Kids' legs grow fast, but don't buy guards "for next year". A big guard twists and doesn't protect where it should. Measure your child and choose the size that fits now. We don't recommend mini guards for kids, because they protect a smaller part of the shin. We explain why in Mini shin guards: comfort or protection.

Still not sure?

Message us on Instagram with the player's height and age and we'll tell you which size to take. MyShin guards are printed to your design, so they can't be returned if the size doesn't fit. It's better to ask before you order.

Once you know your size, design your guards in the editor.
